How to Find Her a Great Gift

gift_small.jpgDecember is a busy gift-buying month for me. On top of Christmas, my wife celebrates her birthday earlier in the month. Needless to say, I’m in the market for a couple gifts for my wife and I want to share some simple ways to find your loved one a great gift for Christmas (or any time of the year).

The first thing to help you in your search is to remember that the gift is for HER - not you! Sure, you might like something you see but will she like it as much as you do? This is one of the hardest things to overcome because when we shop, we automatically look at things selfishly. We think that if we like it, she’s sure to love it. Wrong.

Another way to find the perfect gift for your wife or girlfriend is to take the time to shop…don’t wait until the last minute. There’s no better way to find a crappy gift than to wait until right before her birthday or Christmas to go shopping. By default, if you spend some time shopping for her, you’re bound to find something pretty nice. If you limit yourself, you’ll get stressed out and the creative juices will go out the window.

You can also write things down and take notes about what she wants. Some great gift ideas are bound to come up in conversation or while shopping and if you don’t write them down quickly your guaranteed to forget. Plus you’ll score some brownie points if you can remember something she said 6 weeks ago.

And while you’re writing things down, go through the process of elimination. Ask yourself, “What gifts did she love in the past?” and “What gifts did she not like in the past?”. Some gifts that my wife loved were the one’s that I spent time looking for and put some thought into…Not the one’s I bought at the last minute. And I’ll never buy my wife pajama’s ever again…I’m still getting grief for that one.

I hope this helps and happy shopping!

  1. Very good points! I have in the past waited till the last minute, with lousy results. I plan on doing some good research for this Christmas!

  2. I second that about writing down what she wants. People are usually easy to buy for–if you listen to them all year long, they’ll mention what they want, so you just have to write it down and go with it! ‘Oh, how did you know?’

  3. Just the other day, I found myself writing things down as they popped into my head.

One other thing I can add is to write things down in one spot. I had to consolidate some notes onto one piece of paper in for fear of loosing some of my ideas.

Glad you guys stopped by and I appreciate the comments.

  4. Hiya, Tyler. Great, practical approach.

I’m shocking at picking out the right gifts. Sometimes i give something that is really sweet to someone who is a practical person who doesn’t appreciate sweetness. And i’ve given practical gifts to someone who really appreciates sweetness :-p

As you were basically saying; its about listening and being attentive. thinking about what she would like and not based on what we would like as a gift.

Thanks for providing those great links too.

  5. Yes, write down notes over the course of a whole year in preparation for buying her a birthday gift. This is the best way for guys to know exactly what to get. If you’re unsure, you could always ask her. I have a gift basket store online, and have people buying gifts baskets that contain all the perfect ingredients for their special occasion, and last minute gifts. Both show you care.
