When you think of Valentines Day, what is the first flower that comes to mind? I’m no mind reader, but I’m 99.9% sure that you thought of the rose. And why not?
They’re beautiful and have been a long standing symbol of love and affection. That makes them almost perfect for your wife or girlfriend for Valentines day. I say “almost perfect” because all of the florists out there know this and charge you accordingly. You want roses? You’re going to pay for ‘em!
So here are 5 great alternatives to roses for your wife or girlfriend this Valentines day.
1.) Orchids:

Orchids are a great alternative to roses for Valentines day. There is a wide variety to choose from to suit any taste and they come in a wide array of colors. They are delicate and convey a sense of simplicity and beauty.
Some orchids can be more delicate than others, but I have found the ones that you can order from Flowerbud.com or other similar sites are pretty hardy and last long enough.

2.) Calla Lilies:
One of my wife’s favorite flowers, the calla lily is wonderful and beautiful flower! They boast soft lines and one of them can be almost as beautiful as a full bouquet.
If you order them online, they will come wound pretty tight, but soon open up and they tend to last quite a while. I don’t know the technical term, but they usually grow in or near a bog/marsh environment.
They will require a lot of water and will suck up a lot of water the first couple of days. Be warned, these don’t come cheap…but that’s part of what makes them special.

3.) Tulips:

Most people probably associate tulips with spring time. So why not send your wife or girlfriend a small taste of spring for Valentines Day?
You can find tulips in a wide range of colors (red always seems pretty nice for Valentines Day) and they are easy to care for.
According to Wikipedia, the tulip, as most people think, is not a Dutch flower. It is indigenous to Iran, Afghanistan and surrounding areas.

4.) Amaryllis:

If you’re looking for a bold, red flower for Valentines Day, the amaryllis will fit the bill perfectly.
Usually these come potted in a small vase, but you can find them online as fresh cut flowers. If you order them as a potted plant, don’t make the mistake I did when I ordered some from a local florist for my wife. I had them delivered to her work and she called me as soon as she got them.
“What kind of plant did you send me?” she said. I said, “What do you mean? It’s supposed to be a beautiful red amaryllis.” Well, it wasn’t – it had barley broken through the ground and all she could see was a little green nub.
It did eventually bloom into a beautiful flower, but know what you are getting when you place an order.

5.) Hyacinth:
Last but not least, the hyacinth is a humble yet worthy flower as an alternative to roses for Valentines Day. Each stem has many small blooms…anywhere from 40 to 100! (according to Wikipedia)
Also on Wikipedia, supposedly Mohammad said: “If I had but two loaves of bread, I would sell one and buy hyacinths, for they would feed my soul.”
These guys have a fantastic fragrance and they just look like spring. That is a great combination if you want to brighten up her day this Valentines day.
