Pregnancy Week 21: I Can Feel The Baby Move

21-weeks-carrot.jpg

Average size of a baby @ 21 weeks

It’s all downhill from here. We’re past the halfway point and things are moving right along. My wife looks a beautiful as ever and I think we have settled on a name.

Madeline was our first if-we-have-another-girl name and I’m pretty sure that’s what were going with. Last week, a few people pointed out that they liked the name Madeline.

Dette from Dance of Motherhood, Jason from Roth Family Adventures and Ashley from Boss Sanders all liked the name Madeline.

Thanks for the unofficial vote you guys…it did help us finally make a decision. Now comes the hard part - how do you spell it!

My wife likes the more traditional Madeleine…I like Madeline, but Madelyn is really growing on me. What do you think?

One of the best things that has happened over the last week or so is the ability to feel the baby move and kick! I know having a baby is a miracle - nothing short of one - but feeling another human being inside your wife is rather strange. I’m not going to lie…it’s pretty weird.

You may not notice 50 kicks, punches, and twirls during the day, but as you’re settling down at night, don’t be surprised if your little guy seems ready to dance the night away.

But how often will we be able to feel the baby hangin’ out in utero? It really is an amazing feeling! It’s your very first interaction with your new child. She seems to kick more in the evenings once my wife lays down. Go figure - as soon as my wife wants to rest, the baby wants to play - is that a sign of things to come?

I already feel so protective of this little girl. Now that I can feel her move, I’m already wrapped around her tiny, tiny finger and I’ll do anything to make sure she’s safe and comfortable. And there’s no other place I’d rather her be…my wife already takes such good care of her.

  1. I like Madelyn best. My wife is jealous at the fact that you’re having a girl. She wants a little girl really bad. Hopefully someday.

  2. Hey Tyler. Congrats to you and your wife on the baby!

I remember when my wife was pregnant with our boys. It was the same thing — more movement and kicking at night. Something I wasn’t expecting to happen was the sympathy pain! Not to mention sympathy nausea, weight gain, insomnia and food cravings…

These days, I’m just exhausted trying to keep up with my two little stinkers! I can barely remember what I ate for dinner last night — was it pizza?

But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

    Peace,

    Joey

  3. @Jason: I do to. Thanks for the vote. I’ll admit that girls are a lot of fun. But is does take a strong man to raise a son. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you guys!
@Joey: I haven’t experienced any sympathy feelings this time…maybe that’s my problem. I hear you about not remembering things after you have kids. I joke with my wife about her “mommy” brain, but I’m just as guilty!

  4. I like Madeline if you’re going to have a long ‘i’ or Madelyn for a short sound. Does that make sense? Also, isn’t it cool man feeling the baby kick!?! Lori and I were talking the other day that things are a little different this time around. My son Ty gets most of my belly time because he really likes to snuggle with her at night. I tend to work at night to give them some time together and get caught up, so I’m missing out on a lot of the kicks and stuff. Enjoy it while it lasts, right!?! -Jeremy @ Discovering Dad

  5. What a beautiful name! I vote for your wife’s spelling of Madeleine.

I’m excited for your whole family — almost makes me want another one…

  7. Congrats again Tyler! Madeline is a great name however you chose to spell it. I like Madeline. I agree with Mitch, whatever way your wife wants to spell it that is what you go for.

By the way, nice interview on Discovering Dad. A dad bloggers convention? It would have to be somewhere warm during the cold months. Sounds like a great idea and my interests are piqued.

  8. Ugh! Laptops and touchpads can have minds of their own sometimes.

  9. Of course, with Madeleine being the French version of Madeline, I’m going to side with the Mrs. :) But honestly, with such a beautiful name - you really can’t go wrong!

I’ll try myself not to let the green monster get the best of me with my 3 boys. ;) You guys are past the halfway point!!

  10. I think I like Madeline better. I just think that the extra ‘e’ in Madeleine would make people guess as to whether they’re pronouncing it correct since ‘ei’ has many different sounds (long i, long e, and ‘ay’). My currently pregnant fiancee’ and I went through the same exact thing when we decided upon a name for our unborn son: how should we spell it? After we wrote the many spellings his current name could have (Jaden, Jaeden, Jaydyn, Jadin, etc.), we decided upon Jayden. :-)

Isn’t feeling the baby move one of the coolest feelings you ever felt? I love rubbing my finacee’s belly when my son starts to move around. Sometimes, I’ll randomly rub her belly, and he always responds by poking back at me! It’s like he knows it’s his father’s hand!

And my son is the exact same way, he ALWAYS starts moving about when she is trying to rest. It never fails! Every time she tries to lie down, he starts doing the Cha Cha Slide!
