On the advice of Soapbox Mom, Mitch McDad and James Austin, I have decided to side with the wife and go with Madeleine. I had my heart set on Madelyn, but I sided with the wife for a few reasons.
The main reason? I didn’t want both my wife and my daughter to not like the way her name is spelled for the rest of my life. I just thought it might save me some heartache down the road.
I found a pretty nifty tool to research baby names. The Baby Name Wizard’s Name Voyager [ see the sample here] allows you to type in a name and see the popularity of that name over the last ~120 years.
The chart here is a little hard to read, but the name Madeleine was fairly popular between 1890 and 1940. By the 70’s, the name was pretty much non-existent. Sometime in the mid to late 90’s the popularity of the name shot way up.
At our O.B. appointment the other day, we had another ultrasound done. The last time we had an ultrasound, she was acting pretty shy and we didn’t get a good profile picture. They let us do another ultrasound to see if we could get a look at her face. Not only was she more active this time (thanks to a little bit of Coke), we also got to see her profile and saw her sucking her thumb. It was amazing!
I really like the original Madeleine spelling.
It’s ‘prettier’ I think.
Good choice.
Madeleine is a great name, and taking side with the wife is always a good thing.
I agree with baby boy; his are wise words. When in doubt, go with what the wife says. We forget stuff like this. They don’t.
You might find this map of popular baby names interesting as well. It has the US-wide data that Name Voyager uses but it also lets you view statistics from all the US states and other countries around the world. The ‘Compare Names’ feature can be handy for comparing the popularity of various spellings of a name. I also like that spelling of Madeleine.
@Xbox: You’re right - it is a prettier way to spell it. She’ll have it her whole life so we want to be classic and not trendy.
@Baby Boy: Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Going with the wife IS the best thing!
@Tom: I’m still learning about women, so it’s good to hear that I made the right move.
@Guy: Awesome! That’s a great application. Thanks for the link. I wish I knew about this site 2 months ago. Hopefully some other readers will check it out.
Wow. I didn’t even get to name my own kids. Cool.
I love the name Madeleine
We tried to choose a more obscure name for our daughter Ella. It was pretty much non-existent for many years, but it seems to be making a comeback.
Hope you were able to take home some ultrasound images
Woohoo! I’m happy for all of you. Your explanation was heart warming, by the way…
Love that graph, too.
Dude, why you be copying me? Madeleine is my second daughters name. Step off! LOL! Love the name and you’d be a fool to argue with a pregnant women on names let alone the spelling of them.
@Mitch: I have to admit - my wife is pretty cool like that.
@Sandy: Ella is a beautiful name! Seems like a lot of older names are making a comeback.
@Soapbox Mom: Thank you!
@Joe: I had no idea! I guess great minds think alike
Being a mommy-to-be (5 weeks or so) there are so many questions and doubts about pregnancy and being a parent. There’s such a large amount of online support is awesome! My favorite right now is http://www.ourbabysteps.com because it is not only focused on moms but also on dads so you get two different perspectives. My husband loves this site as well!
