The Lost Art Of How To Write A Love Letter

love-letters-for-your-wife.jpgIn this day and age of quick & easy communication, the art of writing has gone by the wayside. This is especially true for the love letter. There is a common misconception that writing an effective love letter to your wife has be gushy and heart-melting. But let’s be honest, you and I are not Shakespeare and we probably won’t be able to write a Romeo & Juliet level love letter.

Want to know how to write a love letter to your wife or girlfriend? It’s simple…

Write from the heart and keep it simple.

After my grandparents passed away, the family decided to sell their house. Through the process of cleaning out the house to get it ready for market, a small collection of love letters was found. I want to share these with Building Camelot readers to help inspire you to write your own love letters.

My Dear Elizabeth,
These many years together have meant love - pleasure - togetherness - trust - forgiveness - ups & downs - mutual friends - good health - family - travel - fun times/sad times - a helping hand - a new dress - good bye’s/hello’s.

I Love you Elizabeth and may God grant years to come for our love to endure.
Love to you, “Sweetie”
Joe

I wish everyone had someone like you to come home to.

The mother of our wonderful children might be as simple as a paper doily but beautiful as a flower.
Happy Mothers Day

Post-it Note Love Letters :

In addition to these love letters, my grandparents would leave little love notes for one another. They would use post-it notes to leave quick, little messages around the house to let each other know that they were loved and appreciated.

These are just a few ideas for your own love notes. You’ll see how simple they are but they carry a much larger message. Maybe these will inspire you to tell your wife or girlfriend that you appreciate all the little things they do for you.

  • How blessed I feel with having a comfortable home and all my needs provided for.
  • Appreciate you sweeping the carport and helping me vacuum and dust
  • How you rub my back - and it’s always at a time when I really need it
  • How you always try to cheer me up when something has happened to make me feel down
  • To Joe - The happy look you had on your face when you came home after making a deal on the property
  • How you always take the car in when we need gas and an oil change
  • How I consider you my very best friend.

Let me know what you think. These letters are simple but from the heart, and use them only as a guideline to write your own love letters. You know Mother’s Day is right around the corner…it might be the perfect time to break out a pen and some paper.

  1. I felt a little odd when I started to read those words from your grandparents. Myself, I think they are private words.

‘Love letters’ can take many forms, from 85 pages of adornment to a simple text message.

But always, I believe, the inspiration must be the lover, not the letter.

  2. Love letters can be great…just a few words…or a few pages…it doesn’t matter. :)

  3. @XBox: Didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable…that was the last thing I was trying to do. I just wanted the article to be personal and touching. I agree that the lover is the inspiration. I hope to inspire some of those lovers out there.
    @Ashley: Very true! Thank you!

  4. You’re right about it being a lost art. This is definitely one of those parts of life that is very much in need of revival! Consider me inspired.

  5. I certainly didn’t mean that you shouldn’t have posted them. It certainly was personal and touching.

Sometimes reading blogs I feel like quite the voyeur as whats written there is often so private and personal, and very often not even seen by the closest people to the blogger.

    But that’s just me, & I’m odd ;0)

  6. I put a post-it note on the toilet this morning that said, “I put the seat down because I love you.” Does this qualify? I really like the post-it note idea. I’m going to go buy more:)

  7. @Tom: Good to hear - glad you’re inspired
@Xbox: Glad to hear from you again…you’re not odd by any stretch. I always appreciate your honesty.
@Jeremy: You bet it does! I need to buy some myself. Let me know what other ideas you come up with.
