I know I’m not the only guy out there that has to shave and I was inspired by this article from Darren @ Problogger about using your daily life for blogging ideas. So, when I was at Target today, I picked up a new razor and thought I’d share some insights on my experience with Building Camelot readers.

Ever since I switched to using a straight razor as my weapon of choice for my shaving needs, I have used the Gillette Fusion (pictured on the left). Call me a whore for marketing, but the commercial with Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Thierry Henry had me sold. I thought, if I’m going to give up the electric razor I might as well get a great razor. Plus the Fusion just looked cool - I know, I know…not the reason to buy anything.

I’ll admit, I was a sucker for this commercial for the Gillette Fusion:

The main reason I’m blogging about this is because I wasn’t just 100% satisfied with the Fusion. Although I liked the look and shape of the Fusion, I felt like the blades would not stay sharp long enough. I have what you might call moderately sensitive skin. So, when the blades got a little dull, my skin paid the price. You guys know what I mean - that skin on your neck that is more sensitive than anywhere else on your face…it can look pretty ugly with a dull razor.

When I used a new razor cartridge, I got a close and smooth shave. Too bad the blades didn’t stay sharp that long. The packaging for the Fusion blades says that a package of 4 cartridges should last 3 months! Really? There is no way that one of the cartridges could last 3 weeks. I could stretch it to last about a week and a half, but that was about it.

Enter the Schick Quattro Titanium razor. The Schick isn’t as sexy as the Fusion but I’m past that now. I just want a razor that’s going to work and stay sharp longer than the Fusion. The following advertisement for the Schick Quattro doesn’t have the star power like the Fusion, but it still caught my eye:

I picked up a Quattro today at Target. The main reason: COST! The cost of the cartridge refills for the Fusion is much more expensive than the Quattro. I’ve been looking for some ways to shave (pun intended) some cost of my Target bill and I think by switching razors will help. The Quattro is the only razor out there that uses titanium coated blades to extend the useful life of the blade. I’m only one shave in, so I don’t know how effective they’ll be, but I will let everyone know.

The next couple of posts in this series will discuss cost, feel and performance differences between the two razors. Hopefully my insight will help you guys out there make a better decision when choosing to buy a razor.

So far? The Quattro seems to work pretty darn well - my face is baby bottom smooth and no red bumps. Check back for more updates! Want updates in your inbox? Subscribe to Building Camelot by Email here!
