blood-iron-post.jpgThe wife and I have entered into the third trimester of Madeleine’s pregnancy and it’s all downhill from here! In my last update I gave my readers a little background on how my wife and I got to where we are today. If you’re just now joining me, I suggest you check it out to get yourself more up to speed.

We had our 26 week check up today and Mandy had her glucose screening and tolerance test done today. This test helps doctors determine if a woman has diabetes during pregnancy (a.k.a. Gestational diabetes). I’m happy to report that her glucose test results came back normal but her iron levels were low. No wonder she has been so tired the last few months.

I know during the first trimester, women are extremely exhausted from the simple fact of being pregnant. I’ve also been told that during the second trimester women generally get their energy level back to near what it was before pregnancy. Selfishly speaking, Mandy’s energy level hasn’t been what I was expecting over the last 3 months. She has more energy than she did during her first trimester but she hasn’t been as energetic like she was when she was pregnant with Olivia. Her doctor did give her an iron supplement which he said would help.

One thing I never expected to have to deal with when Mandy got pregnant was the testosterone-stealing environment that is the OBGYN office. I went to every single check-up that Mandy had when she was pregnant with Olivia and I don’t plan on missing any this time around. But I cringe every time I have to go. The place is full of mommy magazines and women that aren’t the least bit interested in being there. Can’t say I blame ‘em.

Also, there’s noting like staring at all the posters showing diagrams of the female va-jay-jay and reproductive system. Seeing it in that light sorta takes the fun out of it.

When the doc finally showed up (an hour and a half later…that’s a whole other post) we were able to hear Madeleine’s heartbeat. It was very strong and came through the Doppler monitor almost instantly. As a dad, when I hear that little heart beating, my whole mood changes. That’s my daughter in there and I want to do anything and everything I can to protect her!

And lucky for me, she is being protected by one amazing woman. Since I can’t protect my baby girl right this moment - my attention turns to my wife. Protect her and everything falls into place.
