Gillette Fusion Versus Schick Quattro Titanium: Part II

by Tyler Wainright on May 9, 2008

I’m a few days into my trial run of the Schick Quattro Titanium razor. If you missed the first part of this series you can check out the first part here. I’ll be discussing both the features and the general look of these two razors. The next update will focus on the most important part…performance!

The first thing you’ll notice is the obvious color difference between the two razors. The Fusion is the “midnight” version of the regular razor and touts a darker, tougher looking color scheme. Actually, Gillette calls their darker razor the Phantom.

Target didn’t have the midnight version of the Quattro so I can’t make a full apples-to-apples comparison of the two dark razors. It’s easy to see that these two razors come from two different marketing teams that try to attract different segments of the man market.

“Looks” shouldn’t change the way a razor works so this really should be a non issue.

However, I’d grow a beard before I used some girly looking razor. I’ve got to draw the line somewhere. I like the look of the Fusion better because it’s larger and looks easier to hold and to use. But – the Schick definitely has more of a timeless and classic look.

If my old man were to choose between the two, I’m sure he’d choose the Schick. Same goes for my Grandfather.

You’ll also notice that my Fusion is the powered version. The single battery makes the whole razor vibrate and is supposed to give you a better shave. Again, Target didn’t have the “powered” version of the Quattro so I was stuck buying the Plain-Jane Quattro.

When I first opened the Quattro, the first thing that popped into my head was: “Wow – this is a lot smaller than the Fusion”. After holding them up together I learned that I was wrong…my eyes were playing tricks on me. The blades themselves are the same width but the Fusion has a much larger, what I’ll call a pre-shave comfort strip, than the Quattro.

The Quattro also has a different feel compared to the Fusion. I thought it had to do with a firmer handle but after playing around with both of them, I’ve determined that the Fusion has a more responsive head. When you push the heads back with your fingertip, the Fusion is smoother and has a greater range of motion versus the Quattro.

So far the Fusion Phantom has some features that I like better than the Quattro. But, the main thing I’m looking for is a consistent shave and blades that stay sharp for as long as possible. Stay tuned for part III. Stay up-to-date on all my articles by subscribing in an RSS reader or have updates delivered to your inbox.

  • I have to say that I like the Quattro. I received a couple for free over the past year through free sample sites nd have to say that they cut smooth and don't give me as much problems as other razors. I can't say that I have tried the fusion, but I would put a kudo toward the Quattro from my experience.
  • I have got to say that as a man who shaves his head along with his face, your two choices are not that great. Because I shave my head I have to have a blade that will flex. I have used both of the razors your tested, and both have ripped the crap out of my cranium. Neither are worth the money in my opinion.

The one I use is the Schick Xtreme disposables. Why disposables? Because I go through one razor a week. It is more economical for me to use the disposables as opposed to buying the blades. Disposables are cheaper, by only a few cents mind you, than blades.

    namaste.
  • @Chris: Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the comment. My experience with the Quattro has been good so far. I can tell that the blades hold their edge longer than the fusion which is always a good thing.
@Phil: Very good points! I never thought about disposables being more flexible. I can see where that would cause less irritation. Glad you stopped by and I appreciate your insight.
  • I've long wondered how well the Fusion would work for me, but am stuck in a shaver-rut, since my son (and mom) thought I should use a Braun shaver and not razor.

In time, I am sure, I'll simply have to own up that I don't prefer using a shaver (for touch-ups, sure, but not daily), but until then I'll have to bide my time.

I too have the type of face that seems to take abuse from single, double and triple edge razors. One day I happened along a fusion and my life had changed. Not only did it NOT rip my face apart it left me a close shave I am truly impressed with. Now I have been experimenting on shaving liquid mediums. Ive tried most of the canned shave creams and now this is where I think outside the box... I took some vasiline intensive care lotion and mixed some glycerin with it and now i smooth a little of that on my face before shaving. Not only does it help get the shave closer. It softens the skin at the same time and the glycerin retains moister in the skin. Thus just shave and wipe without strange soaps or residues.

    Good luck

Hi! Count me in! That Schick is a manual one. You should compare it with Quattro Power or better yet, Quattro Titanium Trimmer. Fusion & Quattro Power hasn't been introduced to the Malaysian market yet, or at least my state's market. But the Quattro Titanium has been introduced, although the design is that of Quattro Midnight. The black part of the razor & blade is replaced by white scheme. Overall, its a Quattro Midnight turned white. I hope that the blade is titanium coated. However, when compared to the 'original' Quattro Titanium, I think I liked the Quattro Midnight design more. I used to use XTreme 3 SubZero, and before that Mach3 Champion, but switched to Quattro Titanium due to the cartridge of Quattro Titanium is only RM1.40 more that that of XTreme 3. The basic Mach3 cartridge (The original one, not the Turbo one.) cost RM40.00+, while Quattro Titanium cartridge is only RM26.90. In regards of the performances, I believe that Quattro is better than Mach 3. I've never felt any irritation and razor burn when using it for the first time, and that's without using any lubrication. It's also easy to rinse, and the razor handle is comfortable and looks more premium than the previous Schick's product. Even if Schick have lost in the design dept, this brand has won the price dept. In my area's local shopping mall, it seems that Schick is selling more than that of Gillete.
