It wasn’t too long ago when my wife gave me the go ahead to buy a new HDTV. After doing, what I now know was way too much research, I’m the proud owner of the Vizio VO47L HD TV.
My budget was limited to $1500 since that’s what Uncle Sam decided would be enough for me to help stimulate the economy. Part of that $1500 had to be allocated to the DirecTV HD DVR since they wouldn’t give me one for free…hey - it doesn’t hurt to ask, right?
I picked up both the TV and the DVR at Costco, along with a couple of other little things, for a total of $1600 (tax included). I thought it was a pretty good deal for a full 1080p, 47″ HD TV and the $170 HD DVR and the $100 over budget didn’t give my wife any heartburn.

I had the TV for about a week before the guys came and hooked up the new 5 LNB dish and the new DVR. Until then, I was stuck watching a standard definition signal on a nice new TV. Let me tell you…Standard definition signal + 47″ 1080p HDTV = poo-poo!
My spirits were lifted when I was finally able to see what the TV could do…it was the first round of the 2008 U.S. Open and it looked amazing. So much so that I just stood there for 30 minutes and ogled over the picture quality. I’m convinced that HD was created for sports. Golf…football…baseball…basketball…heck, even professional lacrosse (<-- I had no idea there were professional teams either) look incredible in HD. I can't wait for college football this fall!
Stay tuned for more on what I've learned by making the switch to HD. Subscribe to my RSS feed or have updates delivered to your inbox.
yep… I’m officially jealous. I have yet to allow myself such luxuries. Do you mind if I live vicariously through you?

Well…I’m officially a very lucky guy to have a wife who lets me blow $1600 on “toys”. She said I’m done with toys for a long time and I can’t blame her!
Just as Chuck said…I too am jealous not only of having awife that gave you the go ahead for the purchase, but also for the purchase itself…have fun with it and definitely watch some great shows for me!
Sweet.
When can I come over to watch Nemo & Cars the Movie?
Indeed, it is a TV to be admired.
My incentive went to bills. Not nearly as fun.
Peace,
Joey

@Dad of Divas: Will do…watching some golf right now!
@Babbo: Come over anytime! I need to get some sort of up-converting DVD player because my SD movies still look pretty poor…but, beggars can’t be choosers right?
Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I’m happy for your new toy and all the joy you will garner from it. Can’t say I’m completely devoid of envy… being human and a male and all… but glad you were able to get all that great stuff! I’ll definitely keep your setup in mind when the time comes for us to move up to the big time too.

Yeah, I remember back when I got our new HDTV and our DirecTV HD-DVR. Like you, I stood and stared at the amazing picture. And then I sat and stared. And kept staring. I’m still staring now…
@Tom: I’ll be glad to impart any wisdom I can when you make the switch!
@Kevin: Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Yea - I’m still staring…I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, but I’m still amazed at how great things can look in HD. Even the Today Show is more interesting in HD!
I have to say, I was a tad bit skeptical when my husband pushed for the HDTV but I’ve gotta admit, everything looks so much better in HD! (Well, everything except for Terri Hatcher on Desperate Housewives. Poor gal, the extreme detail isn’t doing her any justice.) Congrats on the new purchase.
Congrats on the new setup! I’ve had my eye on a new HDTV as well but just cannot bring myself to spend the money when I still have a TV that functions just fine. We do have a smaller HDTV upstairs that gives me a taste of what to expect, although as you mentioned also makes me not so eager when I view a standard definition channel.
Enjoy the new TV and don’t be shy about inviting the neighborhood guys over to share in your new toys.

@Jen: I haven’t seen her in HD but it seems like *everyone* looks more “real” in HD…There’s no place to hide when there are that many pixels on the screen.
@Derek: I really should invite some of the guys over. I’ll keep that in mind especially when college football starts! Go Tennessee!
